Abstract

In course of treatment of a gas contg S cpds, an SO2-containing gas is contacted, at elevated temp, with a catalyst comprising oxides of Mo and an inner transition element, e.g. Th or U, on a support, e.g. gamma - alumina. The gas may have previously been treated by the Claus process. In order to remove H2S, the gas may be finally treated by the Stretford process. The catalyst may be made by impregnating the support with an impregnant soln made by adding e.g. citric or tartaric acid to ammonium paramolybdate soln and dissolving e.g. uranyl or ferric cmpds therein, until colour change indicates mixed-complex formation. Impregnation is followed by calcination.
