Abstract

The fuel proper, either fissile or breeder material or a mixt. of the two, esp. in the form of spherical particles is placed in the open cells, 10-3000 mu dia. in plates of cellular material, each enclosed by top and bottom plates, and then stacked in horizontal planes, one above the other, leaving cooling channels between them and enclosed between end plates to form the core. Simplicity and significant cost redn. compared to sheathed fuel rod systems is achieved.
