Abstract

2-(21-Phenoxyacetyl)-4-thiazolidinecarboxylic acid (I), 2-(21-phenoxyacetyl)-3-acetyl-4-thiazolidinecarboxylic acid (II), and the 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol salt (III) of 3-acetyl-4-thiazolidinecarboxylic acid liberate SH gps. under enzyme action and thus have an effect on the polymerisation of nucleotides to nucleic acids, the synthesis of proteins, vitamin coenzymes, and metabolic cell-division and oxidn.-redn. processes. They are pref. administered in association with folic acid, sulphosalicylic acid salts, electrolytes and vitamins. N.B. The formulae given in the body of the specification for (I) and (II) are: (I) is pref. prepd. by reacting L-cysteine with m-formylphenoxyacetic acid in MeOH in the presence of pyridine; (II) is pref. prepd. by acetylating (I) with excess Ac2O at elevated temp. in a H2O/HOAc medium; and (III) is prepd. by reacting the components of the salt in the cold in isopropanol.
