1390503 Liquid detergent compositions UNILEVER Ltd 29 March 1972 [30 March 1971] 8132/71 Heading C5D An aqueous detergent composition comprises a liquid aqueous medium containing from 1 to 50% by wt. of an organic detergent and at least 1% by wt. of a non-detergent electrolyte and, suspended in the medium, capsules containing core material and having at their surface a water-soluble polymer gel, in which the electrolyte and its concentration in the medium and the polymer gel are such that the polymer gel is insoluble in the medium, but dissolves with release of the core material when the composition is diluted with water. The capsules preferably contain 2 to 30% by wt. of polymer gel, in the form of a wall surrounding the core material. The core material may be liquid, e.g. lemon oil, ethylene glycol and liquid paraffin or solid, e.g. bleach, fluorescers, foam boosters, cosmetics and organic detergents. The polymer gel may be a polysaccharide such as pectin, carrageenan, alginic acid and amylopectin; a cellulose ether, e.g. carboxymethyl cellulose; a protein gelatin; or a synthetic polymer such as polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl acetate polyacrylic acid and polyethylene oxide. The electrolyte may be an alkali metal or ammonium salt of citric, tartaric, maleic, oxalic or other organic acid; an alkali metal or ammonium chloride, sulphate, pyrophosphate, tripolyphosphate or dihydrogen ortho phosphate. The capsules may be from 1 micron in diameter up to 500 to 4000 microns. Suspending agents such as synthetic montmorillonite clays and carboxyvinyl polymers may be present. The organic detergent may be an anionic, non- ionic or cationic surfactant. The liquids are of general application, e.g. dish-washing compositions, shampoos, bath preparations and heavy duty liquids for washing textiles.
