Abstract

Cresol (I) is purified by treatment with an acid to free it from fluorescent materials. Pref. 0.01-10 pts. of acid/100 pts. (I) is used where the acid is pref. mineral (HCl), Friedel-Crafts catalyst (AlCl3), oxide (alumina) or cation exchange resin. Treatment temp. is 30-600 degrees C for 5 min-10 hrs. Fluorescence is undesirable where (I) is used as plasticiser for PVC, and this treatment eliminates it.
