Abstract

Aromatic polyethers are prepd. by oxidative polymsn. of a 2,6-disubstituted phenol in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a manganous salt and a pri. or sec. amine or a tert, amine contg. a hydroxyalkyl gp., opt. together with an aldehyde, or of a copper salt, a primary amine and an aldehyde. Method gives highly pure aromatic polyethers with excellent properties, as formation of diphenolquinone is completely suppressed. Specif., the 2,6-disubstituted phenol is 2,6-dimethyl-phenol, 2-methyl-6-ethylphenol or 2,6-diethylphenol.
