Abstract
Method of preventing gas flow due to press. differences between sections of e.g. vacuum appts. around glands necessary to allow movement of shafts or transmission of continuously processed materials, by forming a solid film of gas which sublimes at operating press., maintained by cooling e.g. with liq. nitrogen, in the gap between fixed and moving surfaces. Seal overcomes problems of contamination by lubricants, and is applicable to surfaces of complex shape. Continuous processing of e.g. plastic film in vacuo may be accomplished by passing strip between glands comprising contrarotating rollers, to seal gaps between rollers and vessel walls.
