Abstract

The treatment is effected in an enclosure, which may be a refrigerating chamber for preserving fruits; the latter are arranged in small cages, stacked one above the other. The chamber is equipped with a refrigerating unit, a fan for circulating the air through the mass of fruit and a sublimation device which causes the violent volatilisation of an active 'anti-scald' agent at a temp. higher than its b.pt. The pulverulent active solid, such as diphenylamine, is charged into a hopper, inside the enclosure, and a rotting cylinder delivers a metered quantity on to an electrically heated hot plate at the base of an open-topped evapn. cylinder. The fan is kept going during the fumigation to ensure a homogeneous distribution of the vapours of the active agent in the enclosure. The sublimation process removes the risk of 'scald' from practically all the fruits treated and it eliminates the disadvantages of liq. treatments.
