Abstract
Phenolic esters are prepd. by subjecting an alkylaromatic hydrocarbon or phenolic ester contng. 1 alkyl group in the ring to liquid-phase oxidation with oxygen (i.e. air or a N2/O2 mixture contg. 2.5-21% by vol. O2) at 100-300 degrees C and 1-100 atm. in the presence of the anhydride or acid chloride of a carboxylic acid (e.g. acetic anhydride) and 0.0006-10 mole % of an acid catalyst. The starting material is pref. toluene, xylene ethylbenzene, cumene, mesitylene or p-, m- or o- cresolic ester of 3,5- or 2,4-xylenolic ester. The phenolic esters may be saponified to give phenols which are intermediates for phenolic resins, polyamide fibres, epoxy resins lubricating oil additives and herbicides.
