Abstract

A samle of gas to be analysed, e.g. argon, oxygen, methane impurities in carbon dioxide, is swept onto a precolumn pref. silica gel with carrier gas pref. helium. Carbon dioxide is momentarily absorbed, the impurities being carried on to a molecular sieve (13 angstrom) and detector exhausting to a secondary (5 angstrom) molecular sieve column to confirm or supplement the initial detector analysis. The pre-column is back flushed with helium to remove carbon dioxide ensuring minimal contact of CO2 with molecular sieve augmenting the sieve operational life span.
