Abstract

Charging installation for a continuously refining steel producing electric arc furnace, melting sponge iron. The plant consists of a silo fed upwards inclined moving belt carrying the sponge iron to which carbon and lime are added from bins placed above it. The charge is dropped into a funnel next to the furnace and propelled into it by means of either a centrifugal accelerator consisting of a fast moving endless belt set at an angle, or a compressed air or gas blow pipe. The charge contains 5-25% dust which is suspended above the bath acting as a radiation screen for the continuously operated refining furnace.
