Abstract

This applies esp. to ingots, blooms, bars and plates as well as rods and wires. The shape is treated with molten iron, containing a nominal proportion of carbon, long enough to remove scale or a required thickness of surface metal. The shape is then withdrawn from the molten iron. Pref. The steel shape is immersed in a bath of molten iron and protected from atmospheric oxidation after removal from it, until it has further treatment or it cools to a non-reactive temp.
