Abstract

alpha-D-glucosides of steroids containing hydroxy groups in both the 16alpha- and 17-positions. The 16alpha-alpha-D-glucoside of (a) estriol, (b) 16alpha-hydroxytestosterone, (c) 16alpha-hydroxy-A-nortestosterone, (d) 16alpha-hydroxy-19-nortestosterone, (e) 17-epiestriol. The above compounds possess oestrogenic activity and may be used for inhibiting ovulation and as antifertility agents. The steroid is reacted with a polysaccharide or an oligosaccharide in the presence of a source of the enzyme: amylase or transglycosylase, in an aqueous medium at pH 3.5-6.5 (pref. 4.5-5.5) at 20-45 deg.C., (pref. 30-37 deg.C.).
