Abstract

Production of a compound material in the form of a silicon nitride - ceramic groundmass by flame spraying silicon powder on to a fibrous backing material and heating this in an atmosphere of nitrogen until the silicon is transferred into silicon nitride. The backing material preferably consists of an endless thread fibre which is wound round a mandrel that has been pre-treated with silicon by flame spraying. Silicon is flame-sprayed in turn on to each of a number of layers of the thread fibre which are arranged on top of each other. Flame spraying and the winding-on of the thread fibre are conducted continuously. The thread fibres may consist of tungsten, molybdenum, silicon carbide or tungsten covered with silicon carbide.
