Abstract

Process for the preparation of ethylene comprises (a) continuously supplying naphtha to a cracking oven, which is operating at a temp. higher than required for cracking naphtha to form ethylene and ethane; (b) separating the ethylene; and (c) continuously supplying a replenishing ethane diluent to the naphtha feedstock, the cracking temp. being so high that ethane is cracked as well as naphtha. In previous methods for the preparation of ethylene by cracking naphtha, the separated byproduct ethane was cracked in a separate cracking apparatus. This had the disadvantage of requiring additional equipment which had to be frequently closed down for coke removal. The present high temp. cracking process is carried out in one apparatus, which requires close downs at much less frequent intervals. In addition, yields of ethylene are improved.
