Abstract

868,148. Measuring electrically. CLEVITE CORPORATION. Sept. 16, 1958 [Sept. 16, 1957], No. 29601/58. Class 40 (1). [Also in Groups XXXIX and XL (b)] The transducing element of an instrument for measuring rate of turn (angular acceleration) by electrical means comprises a piezo-electric bimorph. The bimorph consists of two rectangular plates 10, 12, one responsive in a face shear mode and the other in an axial extensional mode. They are provided with separate pairs of electrodes on their major faces and are cemented together face to face in such a manner that one plate responds to flexure of the assembly and the other to torsion (see Group XL (b)). Thus, if the assembly is rigidly mounted at one end upon a base 48 and the base is rotated about the axis Z, any change in angular velocity will result in twisting of the element and an output proportional to the degree of twist will be obtained from the face-shear plate 12. In the embodiment shown, the sensitivity is increased by applying an A.C. signal to the expanding element 10 in such a manner that the assembly vibrates in a bending mode at its resonant frequency. The output measured by the meter 52 will then be an alternating potential.
