Abstract

Devices for applying coating material to a moving material web (2), especially a paper or cardboard web, are known which comprise a mating roll (1) reversing the material web (2), a metering unit (4), the surface of which forms a convergent application gap with the mating roll (1) in the direction of movement of the web, and means for feeding coating material into the application gap. In order to be able to apply different coating materials evenly and without problems at high web speeds even at low coating weights, according to the invention the metering unit (4) is fitted to pivot about an axis (9, 26) parallel to that of the mating roll, the radius (13) of its surface (6) guiding the coating material increases continuously in the direction of travel of the web as far as the metering line (7) and the surface (6) terminates at the metering line (7) in an edge, the radius of which is smaller than 8 mm.
