Abstract

A method for optimising the quality of paper that is to be coated. The paper web W that is to be coated is led through one or more coating stations 12, where coating paste is applied over the paper web W. The said paste contains pigments from binders and optical clarifier, which at least to some degree is bound to the said binders. In the method, measurements are taken of the transverse profile P(UV), relative to the direction of movement of the web W, of the light that is formed in the web W as a result of the fluorescence of the optical clarifier by using ultraviolet light or the equivalent and using the said profile P(UV) to generate an alarm and/or set value signal or signals a;S1 Y SN for the process control system. The said signals are used to control the parameters of the coating process, the finishing process and/or the paper manufacturing process, by means of which it is possible to influence the distribution of the said binders, in order to reduce stains in the pressing of the paper that is manufactured by the method. <IMAGE>
