Abstract

With the introduction of digital television sound in accordance with the NICAM system, the problem arises of constructing a processing unit which ensures that both the digital audio signal and the analog audio signal can be processed. According to the invention, this is achieved by the fact that in the television set a NICAM decoder unit is installed which automatically detects whether a digital audio signal according to the NICAM system and/or an analog audio signal according to a conventional method is present. This NICAM decoder unit automatically switches over to processing a digital audio signal or an analog audio signal and indicates whether a stereo, mono- or bilingual transmission is being received. Furthermore, this decoder unit can be installed not only in new developments but is also suitable for subsequent installation into older television sets. Television sets, particularly television sets with stereo sound. <IMAGE>
