Description

MAN Diesel & Turbo SE
Dual-fuel engine and method for operating the same
The invention relates to a dual-fuel engine. The invention, furthermore, relates to a method for operating a dual-fuel engine.
From practice, dual-fuel engines are known in which on the one hand a liquid fuel such as diesel and on the other hand a gaseous fuel such as natural gas can be 10 combusted. In the gas mode of a dual-fuel engine, a lean gas-air mixture is usually introduced into the cylinders of the engine and ignited by the ignition energy of an ignition fluid likewise introduced into the cylinders.
Assemblies of a dual-fuel engine 1 known from the prior art are shown in Fig. 1, 15 wherein Fig. 1 shows a cylinder 2 of such a dual-fuel engine 1. The cylinder 2 comprises a cylinder head 3. In the cylinder, a piston 4, which is guided by a connecting rod 5, moves up and down. In the cylinder head, a fuel injector 6 is fastened, by way of which liquid fuel, in particular diesel fuel, via a fuel line 7 from a fuel pump 8, can be injected into a combustion chamber 9 of the cylinder 2. The 20 fuel injector 6, the fuel line 7 and the fuel pump 8 are elements of a fuel supply apparatus which serves for supplying liquid fuel into the combustion chamber 9 of the cylinder 2. This fuel supply apparatus is activated in particular when in the cylinder 2 of the dual-fuel engine liquid fuel, in particular diesel, is combusted as fuel. For combusting the liquid fuel, charge air 10 can be additionally introduced 25 into the respective cylinder 2 of the dual-fuel engine 1 via an inlet valve 17, wherein exhaust gas 5 developing during the combustion of the fuel can be discharged from the respective cylinder 2 of the dual-fuel engine 1 via an exhaust valve 18.
In the combustion chamber 9 of the cylinder 2 of the dual-fuel engine 1, a gas can be alternatively combusted as fuel in another operating mode. To this end, the dual-fuel engine 1 comprises a mixture forming unit 20, in which a mixture of combustion air 10 and gas, which is provided to the mixture forming unit 20 via a

During the combustion of gases exhaust gas 15 also develops which can be discharged from the cylinder 2 via the exhaust valve 18. An ignition fluid, which can be introduced into a further combustion chamber 11 of the cylinder 2 with the help of an ignition fluid injector 13, serves for igniting the gas-air mixture in the gas mode of the dualfuel engine 1, wherein this further combustion chamber 11 of the cylinder 2 is coupled to the combustion chamber 9 via at least one connecting channel 12. Alternatively, the ignition fluid can also be directly introduced into the combustion 10 chamber 9. The ignition fluid injector 13 of the cylinder 2 shown in Fig. 1 is a part of an ignition fluid injection system of the dual-fuel engine, wherein the ignition fluid injection system for each cylinder 2 of the dual-fuel engine 1 comprises an individual ignition fluid injector 13. Starting out from a common ignition fluid storage unit 22 of the ignition fluid injection system, the ignition fluid injectors 13 15 can be supplied with ignition fluid via an ignition fluid line 14, wherein the ignition fluid storage unit 22 is assigned an ignition fluid delivery pump 16, which supplies the ignition fluid storage unit 22 with ignition fluid. The ignition fluid delivery pump 16 is preferentially an electrically operated high-pressure pump. Here, the ignition fluid delivery pump 16 is assigned a suction choke 19.
Accordingly, on the one hand, a dual-fuel engine 1 known from practice comprises the fuel supply apparatus for supplying the liquid fuel in the liquid fuel mode of the dual-fuel engine 1 while on the other hand a dual-fuel engine 1 known from practice comprises a separate ignition fluid injection system in order to introduce 25 the ignition fluid into the cylinders 2 of the dual-fuel engine 1 in the fuel mode of the dual-fuel engine 1 for combusting the gaseous fuel.
Accordingly, a dual-fuel engine known from practice comprises two injection systems, namely the fuel supply apparatus for the liquid fuel and the ignition fluid 30 injection system. This requires a complex construction of dual-fuel engines. There is therefore a need for a new dual-fuel engine with a simpler construction and for a method for operating the same.

Starting out from this, the invention is based on the object of creating a new type of dual-fuel engine and a method for operating a dual-fuel engine. This object is solved by a dual-fuel engine according to Claim 1. According to the invention, the fuel supply apparatus for the liquid fuel supplies the combustion chamber of the 5 cylinders with the liquid fuel in the gas fuel operating mode of the dual-fuel engine in such a manner that fuel pumps of the fuel supply apparatus alternately deliver the ignition fluid.
With the dual-fuel engine according to the invention, the fuel supply apparatus, i.e.
the injection system for the liquid fuel, additionally assumes the task of supplying the ignition fluid to the cylinders of the dual-fuel engine in the gas mode of the dual-fuel engine. A separate ignition fluid injection system, which is required with dual-fuel engines known from practice, can be omitted according to the invention. This reduces the complexity of the dual-fuel engine and the same can be produced simpler and more cost-effectively. Of the fuel pumps of the fuel supply apparatus, not all are simultaneously active in the gas mode of the dual-fuel engine in order to supply the ignition fluid to the cylinders, but the fuel supply apparatus for the liquid fuel rather supplies the ignition fluid to the combustion chamber of the cylinders in the gas mode of the dual-fuel engine in such a manner 20 that the fuel pumps of the fuel supply apparatus alternately deliver the ignition fluid in the direction of the cylinders. Fuel pumps which do not currently deliver in the gas mode are shut down in the gas mode. Because of this there is no risk that the fuel pumps of the fuel supply apparatus, which with respect to their rate of delivery are designed for large quantities of a liquid fuel, do not overheat and thus become 25 damaged when delivering small ignition fluid quantities in the gas mode of the dual-fuel engine.
Preferentially, the fuel pumps are embodied as pumps in particular plug-in pumps, which are driven by a camshaft of the dual-fuel engine, wherein each fuel pump is 30 assigned an adjustable choke which is adjustable for adjusting the rate of delivery of the respective fuel pump. This makes possible a particularly simple construction of the dual-fuel engine.

Preferentially, the fuel supply apparatus is designed as common rail fuel supply apparatus. The invention relates to a dual-fuel engine and to a method for operating such a dual-fuel engine. In particular when the fuel supply apparatus is embodied as common rail fuel supply apparatus, the liquid fuel of the dual-fuel 5 engine and the ignition fluid of the dual-fuel engine can be advantageously delivered in the direction of the cylinders of the dual-fuel engine in the liquid fuel operating mode and in the gas fuel operating mode respectively and introduced into the combustion chamber of the same.
The method for operating a dual-fuel engine is defined in Claim 6.
Preferred further developments of the invention are obtained from the subclaims and the following description. Exemplary embodiments of the invention are explained in more detail by way of the drawing without being restricted to this. It 15 shows:
Fig. 1 a block diagram of a dual-fuel engine according to the prior art;
Fig. 2 a block diagram of a dual-fuel engine according to the invention.
Fig. 2 shows assemblies of a dual-fuel engine 23 according to the invention, wherein Fig. 1 shows a cylinder 2 of such a dual-fuel engine 23.
The cylinder 2 shown in Fig. 1 comprises a cylinder head 3. In the cylinder head 3, 25 a piston 4 can move up and down wherein the piston 4 is guided by a connecting rod 5.
The cylinder 2 comprises a combustion chamber 9. In the liquid fuel mode of the dual-fuel engine 23, a liquid fuel is introduced into the combustion chamber 9 of 30 the cylinder 2, namely with the help of the fuel supply apparatus 24 shown in Fig.
2, which is a common rail fuel supply apparatus. The common rail fuel supply apparatus 24 comprises for each cylinder 2 of the dual-fuel engine 23 at least one fuel injector 28, via which in the liquid fuel mode the liquid fuel can be introduced
5/10
PB05879DE
20185370 prh 19 -04- 2018 into the combustion chamber 9 of the respective cylinder 2. Of the common rail fuel supply apparatus 24, multiple fuel pumps 25a, 25b and 25c embodied as highpressure fuel pumps are shown, furthermore, which starting out from a lowpressure region of the common rail fuel supply apparatus deliver fuel into a high5 pressure region of the same, namely into a pressure accumulator system 26 of the common rail fuel supply apparatus 24. Starting out from the pressure accumulator system 26, the liquid fuel can be supplied to the injectors 28 of the cylinders 2 via high-pressure fuel lines 29. According to Fig. 2, each high-pressure fuel pump 25a, 25b and 25c of the common rail fuel supply apparatus 24 is assigned an 10 adjustable choke 27a, 27b, 27c.
In the liquid fuel mode, the liquid fuel, which is introduced into the cylinders 2 via the fuel supply apparatus 24, is combusted, wherein for this purpose charge air 10 is additionally supplied to the cylinders 2 via a suitable inlet valve 17 of the 15 respective cylinder 2. Exhaust gas, which develops during the combustion of the liquid fuel, can be discharged from the combustion chamber 9 of the respective cylinder 2 via an exhaust valve 18.
In a gas fuel operating mode of the dual-fuel engine 23, a gaseous fuel can be 20 supplied to the combustion chamber 9 of the cylinder 2 for combustion, namely a mixture of combustion air 10 and gas, which is formed in a mixture forming unit 20.
The gas is provided to the mixture forming unit 20 via a gas supply line 21. The gas-air mixture enters the combustion chamber 9 of the respective cylinder 2 via the inlet valve 17, wherein exhaust gas 15 developing during the combustion of 25 the gas can be discharged from the cylinder 2 via the exhaust valve 18.
Ignition fluid serves for igniting the gas-air mixture in the gas fuel mode of the dualfuel engine 23. In the dual-fuel engine 23 according to the invention, the fuel supply apparatus 24 for the liquid fuel also supplies the combustion chamber 9 of 30 the cylinder 2 with the ignition fluid in the gas fuel operating mode of the dual-fuel engine 23. The fuel supply apparatus 24 of the dual-fuel engine 23 embodied as common rail fuel supply apparatus accordingly serves for supplying liquid fuel into the combustion chamber 9 of the cylinders 2 in the liquid fuel mode and for
6/10
PB05879DE
20185370 prh 19 -04- 2018 supplying ignition fluid into the combustion chamber 9 of the cylinders 2 in the gas fuel mode. Separate injection systems for liquid fuel and ignition fluid are accordingly dispensed with with the dual-fuel engine 23 according to the invention.
In order to avoid that the high-pressure fuel pumps 25a, 25b and 25c, which are designed for delivering relatively large quantities of liquid fuel in the liquid fuel operating mode of the dual-fuel engine 23 overheat when delivering small ignition fluid quantities in the gas fuel operating mode, the fuel supply apparatus 24 supplies the ignition fluid to the combustion chamber 9 of the cylinders in the gas 10 fuel operating mode in such a manner that the high-pressure fuel pumps 25a, 25b, 25c alternately deliver the ignition fluid. Accordingly, the high-pressure fuel pumps 25a, 25b, 25c do not run simultaneously in the gas fuel operating mode, but alternately.
The high-pressure fuel pumps 25a, 25b and 25c are pumps which are driven starting from a camshaft (not shown) of the dual-fuel engine 23. As already explained, each high-pressure fuel pump 25a, 25b, 25c is assigned an adjustable choke 27a, 27b, 27c, which are adjustable for adjusting the rate of delivery of the respective high-pressure fuel pump 25a, 25b, 25c.
In the gas fuel mode of the dual-fuel engine 23, the high-pressure fuel pumps 25a, 25b, 25c are also driven starting from the camshaft and a rotational speed dependent thereon, while the rate of delivery is adjusted via the chokes 27a, 27b, 27c. Here, the chokes 27a, 27b, 27c for providing relatively small ignition fluid 25 rates of delivery are closed relatively far in the gas fuel operating mode so that the respective high-pressure fuel pump 25a, 25b, 25c then delivers relatively little ignition fluid so that per se there is the risk that as a consequence of the small ignition fluid rates of delivery the respective high-pressure fuel pump 25a, 25b, 25c overheats. Since however the high-pressure fuel pumps 25a, 25b, 25c according 30 to the invention do not run simultaneously in the gas fuel operating mode but rather alternately deliver the ignition fluid, there is no overheating risk for the highpressure fuel pumps 25a, 25b, 25c in the gas fuel operating mode. The highpressure fuel pumps 25a, 25b, 25c are preferentially so-called plug-in pumps.
7/10
PB05879DE
Accordingly, with the dual-fuel engine 23 according to the invention, the delivery of the fuel injection quantity for the liquid fuel in the liquid fuel operating mode and the injection quantity for the ignition fluid in the gas fuel operating mode 5 accordingly takes place via one and the same injection system, namely via the common rail fuel supply apparatus 24. The respective rate of delivery required is adjusted via the adjustable chokes 27a, 27b, 27c assigned to the fuel pumps 25a, 25b, 25c.
In order to avoid overheating of the high-pressure fuel pumps 25a, 25b, 25c in the case of reduced rate of delivery of the high-pressure fuel pumps 25a, 25b, 25c in the gas fuel operating mode, the delivery of the ignition fluid is realised alternately via the high-pressure fuel pumps 25a, 25b, 25c. Accordingly, each high-pressure fuel pump 25a, 25b, 25c merely runs for a defined time interval following which the 15 same is stopped and another one of the high-pressure fuel pumps 25a, 25b, 25c operated for a defined time interval. High-pressure fuel pumps 25a, 25b, 25c which in the gas fuel operating mode do not currently deliver any ignition fluid are shut down in the gas fuel operating mode. Accordingly, only that particular highpressure fuel pump 25a or 25b or 25c that is currently delivering the ignition fluid 20 runs in the gas fuel operating mode at any one time. By contrast, all other highpressure fuel pumps 25b and 25c or 25a and 25c or 25a and 25b are shut down. In the gas fuel operating mode, the high-pressure fuel pumps 25a, 25b, 25c in terms of such an interval switching and at idle can run in any order,
