Abstract

A method for detecting or screening cancer in an individual is described, which method comprises determining the gastritis phenotype of the gastric mucosa of the said individual, determining the cellular fibronectin concentration in a sample such as a serum sample of said individual, selecting a cut−off value for cellular fibronectin, and comparing the cellular fibronectin concentration to the selected cutoff value. A combination of a condition of atrophic gastritis and a concentration of cellular fibronectin above the selected cut­off value is then indicative of gastric cancer in said individual. The gastric phenotype of the gastric mucosa is determined by an analysis of the pepsinogen I and gastrin−17 levels in said individual.
