Description

Attaching arrangement for an edge pad of a trampoline
The invention relates to an attaching arrangement for an edge pad of a trampoline, and the trampoline comprises a mat, a frame, a safety net and a multitude of elastic members arranged between the frame and the mat, and the edge pad is configured to cover the elastic members when the trampoline is in use, and the edge pad comprises an outer edge of the edge pad and a multitude of edge pad fixing arrangements on the outer edge of the edge pad, and the frame comprises a horizontal part comprising an upper side, an inner side, a bottom side and an outer side, and the horizontal part comprises locking holes on the upper side of the horizontal part.
BACKGROUND
Trampolines are commonly used in outdoor and indoor activities. Trampolines comprise a frame and a rebounding mat connected to the frame with stretching elements such as springs or similar elastic elements. Further trampolines typically comprise various safety elements to prevent injury of a user such as a safety enclosure and an edge pad. A safety enclosure is used to prevent the user of a trampoline from jumping or falling outside of the trampoline jumping area onto the surrounding ground, which could result in injury. An edge pad is a padding arranged on top of elastic elements and a frame that helps to prevent injury in case a user jumps or falls on top of the springs or the frame. An edge pad is typically attached to the frame of a trampoline and resting on top of the elastic elements of the trampoline. An edge pad is often made as a number of segments, the shapes of which are adapted to the frame and the mat. In addition, trampolines may comprise various accessories such as staircase, game goals and spotting decks.
Ties, cords, or straps are used to attach the edge pads to the trampoline frame. A common method of attaching the edge pad to the frame is the use of narrow straps or cords. These straps are wrapped around the frame, pass through an opening in the edge pad and are then tied off or secured on the outside surface of the edge pad.
The means currently employed to secure edge pads to the trampoline frame have shortcomings. Current straps have a very small amount of surface contact with the frame and the straps are just wrapped around the frame i.e. the straps are not fixed to the frame itself. Consequently, the straps are able to slip and shift quite easily along and around the frame. This is undesirable because the edge pad may shift inward in which case it may not prevent injury in case a user jumps or falls on top of the frame. Also, binding straps or cords to the frame is slow and attaching place may not be easily accessible.
Edge pad attachment arrangements are disclosed for example in patent publications
US8100813 and US8905898.
There is a clear need for an arrangement to fix an edge pad with a safe and easy way to a trampoline.

DETAILED DESCRIPTIONS OF THE FIGURES
The embodiments in the following description are given as examples only and someone skilled in the art can carry out the basic idea of the invention also in some other way than what is described in the description. Though the description may refer to a certain embodiment or embodiments in several places, this does not mean that the reference would be directed towards only one described embodiment or that the described characteristic would be usable only in one described embodiment.
The individual characteristics of two or more embodiments may be combined and new embodiments of the invention may thus be provided.
Figure 1 shows an example of a trampoline 100. The trampoline comprises a frame 102, a mat 101, an edge pad 104, a safety net 106, and elastic members (not marked in Figure) between the mat and the frame. In this embodiment, the safety net encircles the trampoline. For sake of clarity, one side of the safety net is left out from Figure 1. It must be noted, that in some embodiments, the safety net may be installed as descripted in the Figure 1. The edge pad covers the elastic members and edges of the mat.
The frame 102 comprises leg structures 103, a horizontal part 107, and at least four vertical poles 105 extending above the horizontal part when the trampoline is in use.
The frame arrangement parts are assembled from hollow tubes or similar elongated bodies. The safety net 106 is attached to the poles.
The leg structures 103 are fixed to the horizontal part 107. When the trampoline 100 comprising the frame 102 is in use the leg structures are below the horizontal part.
In this embodiment, the horizontal part is rectangular. Naturally, the horizontal part can be other shape, for example circle or oval. The horizontal part is a continuous structure defining shape and centre area of the trampoline. The mat 101 and the edge pad 104 are in centre area of the trampoline. The mat 101 and the edge pad 104 form surface of the trampoline. The horizontal part defines a plane that is parallel or congruent to the surface of the trampoline. The elastic members are fixed to the horizontal part and the mat.
In this embodiment, the horizontal part 107 comprise four corners. Four poles 105 are positioned at the corners and additional poles at sides of the trampoline. The poles are attached to the horizontal part using locking arrangements. The attached poles extend above the surface of the trampoline, i.e. above the horizontal part. The edge pad 104 is attached to the frame 102, and more specifically the horizontal part, using an attaching arrangement according to the invention.
Figures 2A and 2B show an attaching arrangement 110 for the trampoline 100 according to an embodiment as a cross section. It must be noted that Figures are for illustrating functioning and structure of the invention. Some features may be exaggerated.
Figure 2A shows a detail of the trampoline 100 comprising the horizontal part 107 of the frame, the edge pad 104, a mat 101, the safety net 106, the elastic members 108. The attaching arrangement 110 comprises a hook member 114 and an attaching member 115.
Figure 2B shows a cross section of the horizontal part 107. The horizontal part is hollow, and its cross section is circular. The horizontal part comprise an upper side 122, an inner side 123, a bottom side 124, and an outer side 125. These directions are relative to the trampoline (i.e., the inner side is towards the center area of the trampoline, and the outer side is opposite to the inner side), and they refer to the situation when the trampoline 100 is in use. The upper side of the horizontal part 107 comprise an area that extend from the highest point of the cross section of the horizontal part 45 degrees both inwards and outwards thus forming a quarter segment. Other side areas are defined correspondingly. Thus four side area segments are defined. On the upper side are locking holes 112. The locking hole comprises an outer side end 134 and an inner side end 135.
The elastic member 108 comprises an attaching hook 113 at both ends of the elastic member for attaching the elastic member between the horizontal part 107 and the mat 101. The edge pad 104 comprises an outer edge of the edge pad 109 and an edge pad fixing arrangement 111. In this embodiment, the edge pad fixing arrangement is attached to the outer edge of the edge pad. The edge pad fixing arrangement is in this embodiment a strip of fabric that is stitched to the edge pad.
The strip comprises a fixing hole 129. The safety net 106 comprises a safety net fixing arrangement 128. In this embodiment, the safety net fixing arrangement comprises a fixing hole in lower part of the safety net. The fixing holes of the edge pad fixing arrangement and the safety net fixing arrangement are configured to be positioned in a same place, i.e. they form a tunnel through the edge pad fixing arrangement and the safety net fixing arrangement. Naturally, the fixing arrangements can be implemented in various ways. What is common with those embodiments is that the fixing arrangements are attached to the attaching arrangement 110. In some embodiments, the trampoline does not comprise the safety net, and the attaching arrangement attach only the edge pad. However, the structure of the attaching arrangement is similar in both cases.
The attaching arrangement 110 attach the edge pad 104 or the edge pad and the safety net 106 to the frame of the trampoline 100 and more specifically to the horizontal part 107 of the frame. The hook member 114 is a bended elongated metal structure such as a wire or a rod. The hook member comprises a first end of the hook member and a second end of the hook member and folds or bendings between the ends of the hook member. The bendings in the hook member are configured to form at least a first locking part, a second locking part and a hook part 120. The first locking part is at the first end of the hook member and the second locking part is at the second end of the hook member and the hook part is in middle of the hook member. When the attaching arrangement is in use, the hook part is locked to the horizontal part as in Figure 2A by positioning the first locking part and the second locking part into adjacent locking holes 112 on the upper side 122. The locking holes are configured to receive both the locking part of the hook member and the attaching hook 113 of the elastic member 108. When locked, the hook part is on the inner side 123 of the horizontal part and is curved upwards. The hook part extends towards the mat, i.e. towards the center of the trampoline.
The attaching member 115 is a straplike structure comprising a first end of the attaching member 126 and a second end of the attaching member 127.
Advantageously, the attaching member is at least partly elastic material. When the attaching arrangement 110 is in use the first end of the attaching member is attached at least to the edge pad fixing arrangement 111 and the second end of the attaching member is attached to the hook part 120. In the embodiment shown Figure 2A the first end of the attaching member is attached both to the safety net fixing arrangement 128 and the edge pad fixing arrangement. When the attaching arrangement is in use, the attaching member encircles the horizontal part 107 from the bottom side, i.e. the attaching member is partly below the horizontal part. In the embodiment of Figure 2A, the first end of the attaching member is on the outer side 125 of the horizontal part and the second end of the attaching member is on the inner side 123 of the horizontal part. In this embodiment, the first end of the attaching member comprise a fixing member 130, for attaching the first end of the attaching member to the fixing hole 129 or the fixing holes. The second end of the attaching — member comprises a loop or similar structure for fastening the attaching member to the hook part. The fixing member is an elongated structure configured to put longitudinally through the fixing hole or fixing holes and then to turn crosswise for attaching the fixing arrangement to the attaching arrangement. In that way, the attaching member is anchored to the edge pad 104 or both to the safety net 106 and the edge pad.
The cross section of the horizontal part 107 is circular, that means that surface of the horizontal part is curved, i.e., the surface of the horizontal part has a curvature.
Shape of the hook member 115 between the locking parts and the hook part 120 corresponds to the curvature of the horizontal part. This feature improves settling of the hook member on the horizontal part and thus diminishes movements of the hook member during use of the trampoline.
When the trampoline 100 comprising the attaching arrangement 110 is in use, the edge pad 104 may experience forces that pull it towards the center of the trampoline.
The attaching member 115 stretches and when the pulling force is gone, the attaching member shortens towards its original length and at the same time pulls the edge pad back. Because the hook member 114 is attached to the horizontal part 107 the attaching arrangement do not slip or slide along or around the horizontal part, which is problem with many conventional methods of attaching the edge pad to the frame of the trampoline.
Figure 3 shows the attaching arrangement 110 presented in Figure 2A as seen from below. The elastic members 108 connects the mat 101 and the horizontal part 107 using attaching hooks 113 on both ends of the elastic member. The attaching arrangement is between two adjacent elastic members. The attaching arrangement comprises the hook member 114 and the attaching member 115. The horizontal part comprises additional locking holes 131 on the bottom side 124 of the horizontal part.
The additional locking holes are positioned in different placed than the locking holes in horizontal direction. In this embodiment, the additional locking holes are between two adjacent locking holes in such a way that distances to both locking holes are equal. In some embodiments, the trampoline may use some additional elastic members that are attached to the additional locking holes. For making this possible, the hook part is wide enough to attach the additional elastic member through the hook part.
Figure 4 shows the attaching arrangement 110 presented in Figure 2A as seen from above. The edge pad and the mat are left out for sake of clarity. The frame of the trampoline comprises the leg structure (not seen in Figure) and the horizontal part 107. The elastic members 108 comprise the attaching hooks 113 on both ends of the elastic members. One attaching hook is positioned in the locking hole 112. The locking hole is an elongated slot having longitudinal axis perpendicular to the horizontal part 107 (i.e., perpendicular to longitudinal axis of the horizontal part. The locking hole comprises an outer side end (not marked in Figure) and an inner side end (not marked in Figure). When the elastic member is set between the horizontal part and the mat, the attaching hook is pulled to the inner side end of the locking hole. The attaching arrangement is positioned between two adjacent elastic members and at the same time between two adjacent locking holes. The attaching arrangement comprises the hook member 115 and the attaching member 114. The hook member comprises the first end of the hook member 116, the second end of the hook member 117, the hook part 120, the first locking part (not seen in Figure), the second locking part (not seen in Figure) and first parts of the locking parts (not seen in Figure). The attaching member comprises the first end of the attaching member and the second end of the attaching member 127. At the first end of the attaching member is the fixing member 130 that is configured to attach the edge pad and the safety net 106 to the attaching arrangement and thus holding them in their places during use of the trampoline. The safety net comprises the safety net fixing arrangement 128 that comprises the fixing hole 129. The fixing member is elongated cylindrical body, and it is configured to put through the fixing hole in a longitudinal position and then turned in a position where longitudinal axis of the fixing member is parallel to surface of the safety net. The first end of the attaching member is fixed to middle of the fixing member. The second end of the attaching member comprises a loop or similar arrangement for grabbing to the hook part.
The first parts of the locking parts are longer than the distance between the outer side end and the inner side end. This means that the hook member should be turned so that the hook part is upward when setting the hook member to the locking holes.
This feature improves keeping the hook member in its position when the attaching arrangement is in use.
Figure 5 shows the hook member 115 in detail. The hook member is an elongated bended structure that is formed, for example, bending a metal wire or a rod or similar body. The hook member comprises the first end of the hook member 116, the second end of the hook member 117, and the hook part 120 between the ends of the hook member. The hook part comprises the point of the hook part 121. The hook part is configured to receive and hold the second end of the attaching member. The hook part, when looking from the side (i.e. in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the horizontal part) when the hook member is positioned for use, have an upwards opening U-shape. The hook part comprises two of these U-shapes and they are connected by a horizontal connection part that forms the point of the hook part 121. The point of the hook part is a horizontal part connecting two curved parts of the hook part.
Distance between the first end of the hook member 116 and the second end of the hook member 117 is bigger than distance between adjacent locking holes when the hook member 114 is not attached to the horizontal part. This means that the ends of the hook member should be pressed towards each other when setting the hook member to the locking holes. This feature improves keeping the hook member in its position when the attaching arrangement is in use.
The hook member 114 comprises two locking parts: a first locking part 118 and a second locking part 119. The locking parts are positioned is such a way that the first end of the hook member 116 is a part of the first locking part and the second end of the hook member 117 is a part of the second locking part. The locking parts are — configured to be placed at least partly inside the hollow horizontal part through the locking hole. The first locking part and the second locking part comprise first parts of the locking parts 132, and the first parts of the locking parts are configured to extend towards the outer side of the horizontal part from the locking hole 112 when the attaching arrangement is in use. The locking parts further comprises second parts of the locking parts 133. The second part of the locking part is between the first part of the locking part and rest of the hook member. The second part of the locking part is configured to be at least partly in the locking hole when the attaching arrangement is in use. This means that the second part of the locking part is configured to go through the locking hole. The second parts of the locking parts are shorter than the first parts of the locking parts, and the second parts of the locking parts are in vertical position when the attaching arrangement is in use.
Some advantageous embodiments of the method and apparatus according to the invention have been described above. The invention is however not limited to the embodiments described above, but the inventive idea can be applied in numerous ways within the scope of the claims.
