Description
BRUSH CASSETTE FOR COLLECTING OIL FROM A SURFACE OF WATER
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates to an apparatus for collecting oil from surface of water, and particularly to a brush cassette for collecting oil from a surface of water.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION A brush cassette for collecting oil from a surface of water can be used for example in an oil spill response system disclosed in WO 2012/113978 A1.
The brush cassettes traditionally comprise blocks having bristles for collecting oil. The blocks have been connected to a drive chain, which is used for rotating the blocks around a frame. A problem with the traditional brush cassette is that because the chain is usually made of metal, the cassette is very heavy.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
An object of the present invention is to provide a brush cassette so as to overcome the above problems.
The objects of the invention are achieved by a method and an arrangement which are characterized by what is stated in the independent claims. The preferred embodiments of the invention are disclosed in the dependent claims.
The invention is based on the idea of connecting the blocks directly to each other for forming a block chain.
An advantage of the brush cassette of the invention is that a drive chain is no longer needed and thus it is much lighter than the traditional brush cassette. In an oil spill response vessel having several brush cassettes and each brush cassette having several block chains, the weight saving could be around 300 kg, which means that 300 kg more fuel could be taken on board for longer operation time.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
In the following the invention will be described in greater detail by means of preferred embodiments with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which
Figure 1 is a top view of a brush cassette according to an embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a cross section along line A-A of a brush cassette of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a side view of a block; and Figure 4 is a bottom view of a block.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates to a brush cassette for collecting oil from a surface 40 of water, wherein the brush cassette comprises blocks 10 provided with bristles 20, wherein the blocks 10 are pivotally connected to each other for forming a block chain 30.
According to an embodiment the blocks 10 have been connected to each other by pin joints.
According to an embodiment the blocks 10 are made of plastic. Using plastic in the blocks 10 makes them lightweight reducing the overall weight of the brush cassette.
According to an embodiment the brush cassette comprises several block chains 30 arranged in parallel next to each other.
According to an embodiment the blocks 10 comprise a surface 40 from which the bristles 20 protrude. The surface 40 faces away from a center of the brush cassette.
According to an embodiment the surface 40 is curved. Preferably the cross section of the surface 40 is semi-circular. According to an embodiment the surface 40 comprises at least three faces facing in different directions away from the surface 40. The purpose for having curved or angled surface is to cover as large are with the bristles 20 as possible. It is also beneficial to have the bristles 20 of adjacent block chains 30 interleave in order to leave no gaps between the bristles 20 of the block chains 30.
According to an embodiment the brush cassette comprises a rail 50 for guiding the block chain 30.
According to an embodiment the brush cassette comprises a sprocket 60 for rotating the block chain 30 along the rail 50. According to an embodiment the blocks 10 comprise a notch 70 opposite the surface 40 for interacting with the sprocket 60.
