Abstract

A hydrodynamic fluid film bearing (10) includes a retainer (15) and a journal (20) disposed within the retainer. A plurality of smooth foils (30) are circumferentially distributed around a gap (25) defined by the journal and retainer in overlying relation to wave springs (45). The smooth foils and wave springs are fixed to the retainer by dovetail shaped keys (35) received within mating slots (40) in the retainer for enhanced retention of the foils and springs. The foils and springs extend in opposite circumferential directions from the locations thereon of fixture to the retainer for enhanced coulomb damping.
