Abstract

An aerobic fermentation appts. has a horizontally extending cylindrical housing with a baffle extending across its horizontal midpoint to divide it into upper and lower chambers. These chambers are of similar construction and each includes a layer of liquid-pervious packing material spaced above the floor of the chamber by 100-3000mm. Liquid substrate is introduced into each chamber below its packing layer and produces a treated effluent which is removed from above the layer. Gas and sludge are discharged from each chamber.
