CONSISTE EN PONER CONTACTO ETILENO CON OXIGENO EN PRESENCIA DE UN INHIBIDOR DE REACCION CONTENIENDO CLORO Y DE UN CATALIZADOR QUE CONTIENE PLATA PROMOVIDO POR POTASIO, RUBICIO Y/O CESIO. LA REACCION TIENE LUGAR EN PRESENCIA DE ETANO EN UNA PROPORCION DE AL MENOS 5000 MOLES POR MOL DE INHIBIDOR, EXPRESADO COMO SU EQUIVALENTE DE CLORURO DE VINILO. EL CONTENIDO DE POTASIO, RUBIDIO Y/O CESIO ES DE AL MENOS 5 X 10 (006) ATOMOS-GRAMO POR GRAMO DE CATALIZADOR, EN UNA FORMA QUE SEA EXTRACTABLE POR CONTAC TO CON ACIDO NITRICO DILUIDO. EL CATALIZADOR COMPRENDE DE 3 A 30% EN PESO DE PLATA SOPORTADA SOBRE UNA SUPERFICIE POROSA RESISTENTE AL CALOR CON UN AREA SUPERFICAL ESPECIFICA DE 1 A 5 M POR GRAMO; DICHO SOPORTE PUEDE SER DE ALFA-ALUMINA.
