Abstract

A shielding transporting and/or storage container of cast iron, esp. spheroidal graphite iron, is intended for irradiated nuclear fuel elements and similar radioactive substances the vessel comprises shielding (cylindrical) wall, shielding bottom and removable shielding lid, the latter having a recessed portion providing a shoulder which rests in a stepped seating of the vessel wall. The vessel wall has a thickened region at top and bottom rims. Bores pass down through the side wall for supply and removal ducts and for inspection purposes. The top end of each bore leads out in the lid seating region, where it is in alignment with a continuation bore passing up through the shielding lid and contg. a valve this continuation bore is closed by an auxiliary lid. The shielding lid may have in addn. monitoring and inspection bores, contg. valves or monitoring equipment these bores are also closed by the auxiliary lid.
