Abstract

A roller bearing free wheel (27) is arranged between the starter motor drive shaft (12) and the starter pinion driving shaft (40). The free wheel inner ring (34) is fitted on a coarse threaded section of the pinion driving shaft and the outer ring is in mesh with a straight spline (25) carried by a cover (17) fixed to the motor shaft (12). The outer free wheel ring has a projection (28) containing the engagement spring and is subject to forwards thrust by the magnet push rod (53). Should the pinion strike the fly wheel ring on the tooth, the magnet continues to exercise forwards thrust to push the roller free wheel (27) opposite to the pinion shaft (40). The free wheel then turns on its coarse thread (41) allowing the stater pinion to turn and engage fully. The starter motor is energised by a relay only when the pinion has fully engaged.
