Abstract

For separating the isotopes of an element, a gaseous compound of this element is simultaneously irradiated by IR radiation of two different wavelengths for a time of less than 10<-5> seconds. In this case, the first radiation has a wavelength which corresponds to an absorption band of the gaseous compound. The absorption band in question must in this case be one which corresponds to a form of molecular vibration in which the atoms of the element to be separated participate. The second radiation has a power density which is higher than 10<6> Watt/cm<2> and has the effect that the compound is isotopically selectively excited and converted. This conversion can either be a decomposition or a reaction with a second gas and the separation or enrichment of the isotopes is carried out by the converted molecules then being separated off from the unconverted molecules and isolated. As a result of this multiple photon absorption, an additional isotope enrichment is achieved in comparison to hitherto employed processes of single photon absorption.
