Abstract
A method for combustión of a carbon fuel, comprising forming an intimate mixture of said fuel and air; and contacting said fuel and air mixture with an oxidation catalyst at a temperature sufficient to cause said mixture to burn, said catalyst having a surface area of at least 20 m2/g, after calcination for 2 hours at a temperature of 1,200º c, said catalyst comprising a calcined, catalytically active aggregate consisting of alumina and an oxidic component, which includes at least two additional metal oxides and which is selected from the group consisting of a) a chromium oxide or tungsten or mixtures thereof, at least one oxide of a group ivb metal; b) an oxide of a rare earth metal and at least one oxide of a group ivb metal; c) an oxide of a rare earth metal, a chromium or tungsten oxide or mixtures thereof and, in addition, at least one oxide of a group ivb metal; and d) an oxide of a rare earth metal, a chromium or tungsten oxide or mixtures thereof and, in addition, an oxide of calcium, strontium, barium, silicon, tin or mixtures of said oxides; and a catalytically effective amount of a metal of the platinum group added to said aggregate after its calcination at a temperature of at least 850º c, except for the oxidic component d) which is subjected to 500º c.
