Abstract

A method of preparing a corrosion resistant coated metal substrate with a pre-paint adherent coating from a pre-paint coating composition containing chromic acid and powdery zinc, the method of which consists of: (1) preparing a precursor constituent for said pre-painting coating composition, said constituent comprising an aqueous medium, chromic acid and a compatible pH adjusting agent, the chromic acid being present in sufficient quantity to impart to the water a pH lower than 0.8 and said compatible pH adjusting agent being present in an amount sufficient to form a precursor constituent with a pH adjusted between 0.8 and about 6; (2) mixing the resulting precursor constituent with an additional pre-painted coating composition substance including powdery zinc; (3) applying the coating composition prior to the resulting painting to a metal substrate and (4) allow the evaporation of the volatile constituents of the coating, thus obtaining on said substrate a coating prior to painting, adherent and resistant to corrosion.
