Abstract
A method and associated apparatus for electron beam hardening of coatings applied to substrates, the method of which is to pass the coated substrate along a predetermined path; accelerating the radiation of the electron beam through an electron-permeable window in a pre-selected region of said path and causing the radiation to extend linearly along said path in said region accelerating in a direction transverse to said path; adjust the radiation that extends linearly within energy limits substantially between 50 and 300 keV and with doses included between 0.5 and several megarads; interposing an electron-permeable layer on the coated substrate; and locating the proximity of said region of the path along which the coated substrate is passing to adopt the adjustment of said energy and said dose to the thickness and materials of the coating, the substrate and the interposed layer in order to concentrate the main amount of energy of the electronic beam in said coating to harden it and to ensure a minimum energy reaction with said substrate.
