Abstract

A procedure for the preparation of organic compounds having a substituent represented by the formula ** (See formula) ** wherein M is alkali metal or ammonium and its acids or esters, characterized by reacting a conjugated base of a hemiacetal of a ketomalonic acid diester and an alcohol having an active alcoholic hydroxy group, with a bromo- or iodoacetate ester, to produce the ester form of organic compounds; and, when the alkali metal salt form of said organic compounds is desired, reacting the ester form with an alkali metal hydroxide to produce the mentioned alkali metal salt form; and, when the acid form of the organic compounds is desired, acidifying the alkali metal salt form to produce the acid form; and, when the ammonium salt form of the organic compounds is desired, react the acid form with ammonia or ammonium hydroxide to produce the aforementioned ammonium salt form.
