Abstract

An improved method of producing isoprene by catalytic condensation between isobutylene and formaldehyde, in which the improvement comprises condensing isobutylene and formaldehyde, at a temperature above 180ºC, using as catalyst a solid catalyst comprising (1) silver ion, (2) oxide aluminum and (3) silicon oxide, the atomic ratio of aluminum to silver is approximately 1/10 to approximately 30/1 and the weight ratio of aluminum oxide to silicon oxide is approximately 1/5000 to approximately 2 /one.
