Current limiting circuit breaker having at least one polar unit that includes a contact structure and an actuation device thereof, characterized in that said actuation device includes a magnetic actuation structure (23) that defines a circuit of magnetic flux and having a slot (63) with an open end (65) formed therein, and because said contact structure includes a pair of separate fixed contacts (33) or (97) and a contact arm (27 or 93) guided such that it can perform a linear movement to engage with or separate from said fixed contacts, said contact arm including a portion located in said slot and said contact arm being located in the vicinity of the open end of the same when the contact arm is in the connection position in relation to the fixed contacts, the arrangement being such that a leakage current flowing through of said contact arm and having a predetermined value, induce in the magnetic drive structure a sufficient magnetic flux to give rise to a rapid movement of contact separation and current limitation of the contact arm inside said groove, and further characterized by a maintenance device (41) which serves, when the contact arm is coupled with the fixed contacts, to keep the contact arm in the connection position of the same with a maintenance force lower than the force acting on the contact arm in the inward direction of said slot when sufficient magnetic flux is induced in said magnetic drive structure.
