Abstract
Fuel burning method and apparatus, the method comprising the operations of injecting into a combustion zone a fuel-rich mixture comprising the latter and substantially less than the amount of an oxygen-containing gas required for stoichiometric combustion intended to form a core stream in said combustion zone, and the simultaneous injection into said combustion area of a gas jacket containing oxygen in closely surrounding relationship with said core stream so that this gas jacket flows along said core stream and remains substantially unmixed with it through an initial portion of at least said combustion zone, the amount of gas in said jacket being at least equal to the stoichiometric amount of air required for a complete burning of said fuel.
