A process for sulfurizing a petroleum distillate desulfurization catalyst initially comprising contacting a sulfur-containing petroleum distillate feed with a catalyst containing at least one hydrogenation component compounded with an alumina base, under conditions of sulfidation, at a temperature of at least 349ºC, and thereafter contacting said catalyst with said feed under hydrodesulfurization conditions at a temperature below 343ºC.
