Abstract
A method of densifying, hardening, and imparting strength to a body or coating having interconnected porosities, which method comprises impregnating the body or coating with a solution of chromic acid; dry and cure the body or impregnated coating, at a temperature sufficient to convert chromic acid to chromium oxide; and repeating the impregnation and curing steps at least once to densify, harden, and reinforce the body or coating, the body or coating comprising a material that is insoluble in, and does not react with, the chromic acid solution and is thermally stable. at least up to the minimum cure temperature used to convert chromic acid to chromium oxide, characterized by the use of a chromic acid solution containing a dissolved metal oxide, to impregnate the body or coating.
