Improvements introduced into a rack and pinion steering mechanism, comprising: a rack-carrying rack bar; sprocket means including a shaft, a sprocket on said shaft and bearing means for mounting said shaft in rotation; and a unitary envelope including at least two conjugated envelope sheaths enclosing said rack bar, said pinion and said bearing means, each of said sheaths including first support means for slidingly mounting said rack bar and a few seconds support means in which said pinion assembly is fixedly mounted, engaging or being operatively coupled said pinion with said rack.
