Abstract

A method of collecting seismic data to determine the three-dimensional configuration of a land formation under a body of water by means of a continuously moving marine seismic exploration system, including repetitive seismic source means and a plurality of arranged hydrophones in a fan-shaped grouping, comprising the operations of: (a) moving, by means of a single seismic vessel, means moving along a substantially straight basic course line, said means of repetitive seismic source and said fan-shaped tail such that the center points between all possible pairs of hydrophone station seismic source location point, during the movement of said seismic vessel along said basic course line form a two-dimensional grid of laterally displaced center points of said basic course line, including transversal groups of central points aligned, substantially perpendicular to said basic course line, the total displacement length of said two-dimensional grid of central points in said cross direction remaining substantially constant during the recognition operation, said movement further characterized by allowing the posterior end of said tail moves behind said seismic vessel with some displacement relative to the basic course, and that the front end of the tail leads from a series of situations closer to said basic line than said rear end; (b) firing said seismic source means in sequence at known times to initiate the displacement of said seismic energy downward, towards the seismic discontinuities existing within said land formation; (c) provide a digital indication of multi-bit positional data of the position of at least two targets on board said tail relative to said seismic vessel means and (d) receive on said plurality of hydrophones, after triggering said seismic source means, separate reflection signals representative of the received energy when the hydrophones are located at a plurality of known hydrophone stations in order to provide the series of multi-bit seismic data indications, said indications being associated with crossed groups of formation associated with crossed groups of central points.
