Abstract
A method of obtaining an immunogenic substance suitable for use to confer immunity to a mammal or bird against pasteurellosis caused by infection with Pasteurella multocida or Pasteurella haemolytica, a substance that can be obtained from a capsule variant of a serotype selected from the serotypes of P. multocida and P. haemolytica, said serotype corresponding to the serotype against which immunity must be conferred by said substance, which is not toxic in mammals and birds at the immunizing dose of said substance; it is antigenically stable after 10 minutes in water at 100ºC; it is not dialyzable; it is soluble in water, and is substantially free of unencapsulated variants of P, multocida and P. haemolytica, characterized in that cells of P. multocida or P. haemolytica encapsulated are grown to provide a culture of P. multocida or P. cells. haemolytica; Chemical precipitation of the culture endotoxin, or the medium or lysate thereof, is performed to provide a substantially endotoxin-free supernatant material, and the immunogenic substance, or a solution thereof, is isolated from the supernatant material.
