A printing system comprising a printer and a keyboard having character keys; a buffer electrically connected to said printer for storing representative codes of characters manipulated on said keyboard, characterized by a main storage memory in series divided into storage blocks; means for providing selective access to said storage blocks; means connected to said access means for automatically assigning said storage blocks to the storage of blocks of characters transmitted to and from said buffer; said means including for automatically assigning said storage blocks a registration protocol of said main memory that includes indications of available storage blocks and the addresses of previously assigned blocks; and means for reading said indications and developing from them the address in said main memory of the immediate available block of the tape.
