Abstract

Apparatus for separating isotopes from a material containing a first isotope and a second isotope, characterized by: (a) container means that can be sealed, adapted to be connected to a vacuum pump, said container means having a concentric opening around an optical axis, to admit radiation inside said container means; (b) vaporization means disposed within said container means, to provide an atomic ray of said material, normal to and passing said optical axis, said ray having a dimension parallel to said optical axis which is long in comparison with its dimension normal to said optical axis; (c) first collecting plate means, arranged within said container means, for receiving said atomic ray; (d) second collector plate means, disposed within said container means, adjacent said ray; (e) a first radiation source for producing a first radiation beam at a predetermined frequency, which excites the atoms of said first isotope but does not substantially excite the atoms of said second isotope; (f) a second source of radiation for producing a second beam of radiation at a predetermined frequency, which ionizes the excited atoms of said first isotope but does not substantially ionize the atoms of said second isotope; (g) means for directing said radiation rays into said container, along said optical axis; and (h) means for causing said ionized atoms to collide on said second collector plate means.
