Abstract
Synthetic polymers are spun vertically downwards through a spinneret, the orifices of which are so spaced that their centres are between 3À5 and 10 mm. apart, the filaments cooled by blowing a stream of gaseous cooling medium on to them at an angle of from 80 to 150 degrees to the direction of the movement of the filaments and supplementary heat is continuously supplied to the spinneret during the spinning process, the amount of supplementary heat being regulated such that it is not less than half the amount and not more than the total amount of heat removed from the spinneret by the gaseous cooling medium. The supplementary heat may be supplied by a radiator or by means of a heater in the spinneret. If a radiator is used, it may be aimed at the spinneret or parallel to the nozzle plate. The spinneret is preferably made of low carbon steel having an emissivity greater than 0À3. The process is suitable for use with polyesters, for example polyethylene terephthalate, polyamides such as nylon 6 and nylon 66 and polyolefines such as polyethylene and polypropylene. Steam may be used as a cooling medium. A latent crimp may be imparted to the filaments by cooling them from one side only. Specifications 1,262,811, 1,262,812 and 1,262,814 are referred to.
