A distillation unit having a series of instantaneous evaporation chambers arranged to operate at decreasing pressures in progression through the array, receiving, each chamber subsequent to the first, liquid directly from a preceding chamber at a higher pressure, and discharging, each chamber before the last, liquid directly to a chamber in succession at a lower pressure, and a series of condensation chambers arranged to act at decreasing pressures in progression through the series, receiving, each of the chambers, steam from the chamber of respective evaporation operating at the same pressure, and in reverse progression through the series, receiving each chamber subsequent to the initial cooling liquid to effect the condensation of the vapor coming from a preceding chamber, at a lower temperature and pressure, directly by the effect of gravity and discharging liquid, each chamber before the last chamber, to a following chamber, at a higher temperature and pressure, directly by the effect of gravity, positioned inside an individual housing that accommodates ducts for vapor transfer from the respective evaporation chambers to the associated condensation chambers, with the series of evaporation chambers positioned vertically above the series of condensation chambers.
