Process for the continuous casting of steel billets, in which the steel is cast in a chilled open ingot mold, which oscillates with an essentially sinusoidal velocity, and in which the bar thus formed is pulled with a speed adapted to the conditions of the laundry, characterized in that the average speed of the movement of descent of the ingot mold, in each period of the oscillation, is adjusted to a constant value adapted to the conditions of the laundry, and the maximum speed of the bar remains below that of the ingot mold during, at least, approximately 55% of the time required for the downward movement of the ingot mold during each period of oscillation thereof, and at most approximately 80% of said time required for the reduction of the ingot mold in its oscillation period.
