Abstract

Spark gaps (see Division H1) are made by disposing spaced conductive parts between two strips of insulating material which includes a plastics material, disposing said strips and said conductive parts between a pair of rigid pressure members, and moving said pressure members together to press said conductive parts into said strips and to form an insulating member having said conductive parts locked in spaced relation therein. In making spark gaps, a number of U-shaped wires 32 are held in spaced relation by adhesive tape on a card with the bights between two strips of insulating material and are placed between press plates having mating recesses 43 and 44 and electric heating elements 47 and 48 to press the wires into the strips. The bights of the wires are then severed by cutters 54. The press may also form grooves in the strips between the U-shaped wires to facilitate the subsequent separation of individual spark gaps. The plastics material is cured during and/or following the pressing.
