Abstract
Grain loss measuring apparatus in a combine harvester which has a straw shaker, a short straw sieve and a receiving device for the grains to be measured comprises a pressure responsive sensing device operated by the amount of grain passing a specific point per unit time. The sensing device may be arranged to measure the grain loss at the straw shaker or the short straw sieve and comprises a blower 76 and a co-operating pressure gauge 78. The sensing device may be arranged to automatically regulate the speed of the combine and, if desired, the operation of a blower which co-operates with the shaker or the sieve, or merely to provide a visible or audible signal to the harvester operator. Where the sensing means is to be used in conjunction with the shaker 12 an aperture 20 is provided extending across the whole width of the shaker which collects the grain passing through at that point and delivers it via a worm 24 to the sensing device 70. The worm may be replaced by an angled plate or the device 70 may extend across the full width of the combine. Where the sensing device is to be used in conjunction with the sieve three worms are positioned at the end of the sieve each feeding a sensing device. Two of the sensing devices are used to control the sieve apertures and the sieve blower with the third controlling both. When the apertures are enlarged the harvester's chaff worms may become overfull so a further measuring device is provided and the outputs of all the devices are fed to a computer. The sensing device 70, Fig. 3, has a suction blower 74 for removing chaff. The pressure gauge 78 registers a reading dependent on the degree to which the air flow from the blower is disturbed by the grain flow. In a modification the blower 76 is directed up the grain channel from one side and the pressure gauge is located someway up the channel at the other side so that the air flow sweeps the whole of the cross section of the channel.
