Abstract

Novel ethers of the formula wherein each R 1 is independently a fluorine or chlorine atom or a C 1-9 optionally halosubstituted alkyl group, provided that not more than two are alkyl groups, or two R 1 s form a C 1-18 optionally halo - substituted alkylene radical A is a radical of the formula where R 3 and R 4 are hydrogen or chlorine atoms or alkyl groups, R 5 and R 6 are hydrogen or fluorine atoms, R 7 is a hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine or bromine atom or a perfluoroalkyl group and p is from 1 to 9, provided that when R 6 and R 7 are both fluorine atoms R 5 is also a fluorine atom C and D are independently divalent radicals derivable from unsaturated compounds m and n are from 0 to 75 v is 0 or 1 and E is a hydrogen or halogen atom, provided that when E is a bromine atom no other bromine atom is present, or E is a radical where u is from 1 to 6, provided that when v is zero the carbon atom adjacent to the sulphate group bears at least one hydrogen atom and provided that, when E is hydrogen or halogen, m+n+v is at least 1 are prepared (1) when v=0 by telomerizing a bromide or iodide of the formula where E is bromine or iodine with one or two olefinic or acetylenic compounds or (2) when v is 1, by converting the corresponding compound in which E is an OH group into a bromide or iodide, and in each case if desired replacing the bromine or iodine atom by a hydrogen, chlorine. or fluorine atom or reacting the compound with SO 3 . Bactericidal and bacteristatic agents, e.g. salves and ointments contain lower telomer iodides of the above formula as active ingredients, E being an iodine atom and m + n being from 1 to 5.
