Abstract

A figure toy has movable eyes with eye moving means for moving the eyes at a first rate in one direction and at a second slower rate in the reverse direction so that the eyes move through simulated reading patterns. Additionally, the toy is provided with movable arms and a sound producing device, the two being attached, so that when the arms are moved to a first position the sound producing device produces a first character of sound corresponding to non-reading sounds, and when the arms are moved to a second position the sound producing device produces a second character of sound corresponding to reading sounds. The eye drive structure is shown in Fig. 9 wherein the eyeballs 20 and 22 are mounted in transparent bubbles 24 and 26 which in turn are mounted in eye sockets 28 and 30 within head 12 of the toy. Cross link 36 is a unitary structure with pins 38 and 40 which engage on the back of the eyeballs. Thin sections 42 and 44 act as hinges to permit relative bending movement of the link with respect to the eyeball. Guide bar 46 is positioned under link 36 and a similar guide bar can be placed over it and so the eyeballs will rotate upon their own vertical axis. The eye moving mechanism is operated by means of a pulley 54 carried on a worm shaft 48 (not shown) which also carries worm 58 which is in gear tooth engagement with gear 60 (Fig. 9). Gear 60 is pivoted on pin 62, which is secured inside the head 12, and engages gear 64, which carries crank pin 68 extending forward from its face. Yoke 70 is pivoted on pivot 72 and has a slot 74 which engages upon crank pin 68. Connector pin 76 extends forward from the yoke adjacent to pivot 72 and engages in cross link 36. As the pulley is rotated, gear 64 rotates in a clockwise direction. This causes angular oscillating motion of link 70 about its pivot pin 72 with yoke 70 moving more slowly while crank pin 68 is farther away from pin 72 and returning relatively fast in anti-clockwise direction as pin 68 is close to pin 72. This causes the eyes to sweep slowly in the reading direction and return rapidly in the opposite direction.
